Corona prints on the wages

The corona crisis has had an impact on gross wages, especially in the lower income groups. Nominal wages were 4.0 percent lower in the second quarter of the year than a year earlier, as reported by the german federal statistical office.

Since consumer prices rose by 0.8 percent at the same time, the real wage decline was as much as 4.7 percent. Stronger jerks have never been seen since statistics began in 2007. Short-time allowance not included in calculations.

In the lower wage groups for unskilled workers, paid working hours fell by an above-average 9.8 percent over the year, while wages paid by the employer fell by 7.4 percent.

For people in managerial positions, working hours fell by an average of only 3.0 percent and wages by an average of only 2.0 percent. The statisticians also found evidence of a continuing wage gap between west and east. With an average gross income of 41,534 euros, full-time employees in the east still lag behind their colleagues in the west, who averaged 52,803 euros.
